Periodontal is often referred to as gum disease. This is a chronic, progressive dental condition caused by inflammation in the gums due to bacterial infection. This inflammatory condition is called Gingivitis, which is reversible by improving oral hygiene and keeping up with professional cleanings. If gingivitis is left untreated for too long, this infection can quickly progress to Periodontal Disease, which is not reversible. Gum disease will result in bone loss, and eventually, tooth loss, if not properly maintained and monitored by your Dentist.
Gum disease can be prevented in most cases, as poor oral hygiene is usually the cause. Brushing your teeth at least twice a day, flossing daily, and seeing your dentist at least twice per year can considerably lower your risk of developing it. Once you have been diagnosed with Gum Disease, it cannot be cured; but it can be managed with professional treatments, and diligent at-home care, to prevent it from getting worse.
